From Quarry to Kiln

EXHIBITION DESIGN FOR Johnson Tiles at CLERKENWELL DESIGN WEEK

Manufacturing was the narrative for this interactive exhibition at Clerkenwell Design Week. With over 100 years experience in producing ceramic tiles here in the UK Johnson Tiles are one of a few notable companies left in a dying industry.

Embracing the vibrancy of the 3 day event and reflecting the warts and all aesthetic of the post-industrial Farmiloe Building in which is it was housed, I focused on the actual equipment and raw ingredients found in Johnson’s longstanding factory in Stoke-on-Trent in order to tell the hidden story of how their tiles are actually made. Laying out sculptural formations of said materials to form a winding walkway, the linear processes of taking materials from the earth and transforming them into colourful and patterned tiles was visually explained.

“The processes behind the materials that we come in contact with on a daily basis are often hidden or overlooked. Recognising them allows us to understand the value of the end product.”
