The Brewhouse,

NorthDown Brewery

design & Build

Like many UK breweries, Margate’s NorthDown Brewery produces beer from an industrial unit on the edge of town. The brief on this project was to both brighten the space and make it more functional so that the team could welcome the public into the space while operating the brewhouse more efficiently.

With the impressive fermentation tanks flanking one side of the unit, the opposite wall was allocated to create a welcoming service area that doubled up for storage. At the same time, an adjacent room previously used as a dumping ground was converted into a Taproom-cum-office. To maximise visual impact, the wall behind the newly fitted cabinets, worktop and sink was extended and painted with bands of colour inspired by one of the brewery's popular beers, Tidal Pool. Oriented strand board was used for its raw aesthetic to tie in with the industrial nature of the building, and was further utilised for the joinery in the Taproom. Here subtle dark green and gold accents were added to the large central table; a nod to the sleek NorthDown Lager branding.

"Branding is central to any brewer, it’s what helps make us stand out in a very competitive market. So to play with the design of one of our most popular beers and work the colours so prominently into the Brewhouse was a mater stroke.”
